Ultimate Fall HVAC Prep (DIY + Pro Guide)

When nights dip into the 40s, small HVAC issues become winter headaches. Fall is the sweet spot to test the system, tidy things up, and catch wear items before you’re staring at a “no-heat” alert.

Cold snaps magnify tiny problems: a weak igniter fails outright, a dirty sensor trips safeties, and a clogged condensate trap shuts the unit down. A shoulder-season tune keeps you safe, efficient, and in control of timing and costs.

THINGS YOU CAN DO YOURSELF

  • Change the filter (match MERV to your system so airflow isn’t choked).

  • Clear returns/supplies; run heat for a few minutes to confirm quick ignition and steady warmth.

  • Test smoke/CO detectors and replace batteries.

  • If you have a humidifier: swap the pad, set to “HEAT,” close the summer bypass.

  • Keep 3 ft of clearance around the furnace/boiler; move combustibles.

PROFESSIONAL TUNE-UP

Combustion analysis and gas-pressure check, heat-exchanger/vent inspection, igniter & flame-sensor service, blower amp-draw and capacitor check, static-pressure reading to catch duct issues, and condensate trap/drain cleanout.
Boilers: expansion tank charge, relief valve test, circulators/zone valves, air bleed.

Indoor air quality & humidity

Aim for ~35–45% RH in normal cold; lower it during deep freezes to avoid window condensation. If air feels dusty/stuffy, consider filtration that preserves airflow, or HRV/ERV for tighter homes.

When to repair vs replace

At 15–20 years, with repeated lockouts or rising fuel use, compare repair costs to modern furnaces or cold-climate heat pumps. Right-sizing and duct fixes often solve “that one cold room.”
